Week 1: Topic/Social Media

Remember staying awake till morning on those long winter nights watching the weather channel religiously to see if your school has a snow day or not? Well the wait is over. The revolutionary new iPhone Application, Website and Social Media site, called KnowYourSnow, will eliminate the anticipation forever. It's also incredibly simple to use. Users simply enter their school's name and town into the information box and are transported to a world without worries. KnowYourSnow will immediately calculate the probability of having a snow day considering weather conditions and past recollections.

KnowYourSnow will take advantage of the technological era in new and exciting ways. Users will be able to download the application from the App Store and get updates and notifications straight to their phone. Also, since children these days spend the majority of their time on the computer and social media sites, users can "like" KnowYourSnow on Facebook or follow us on Twitter. The KnowYourSnow Facebook page will notify users in the event of a snow day and update them the whole night long. Also, it will allow users to connect with one another either to complain on how they didn't do their homework or plan their day off accordingly. Twitter will allow users to do the same while receiving free advertising through trending and tweets.

Although they are it's main target, KnowYourSnow will not only be available to young grade school children. It will also benefit users who are college students, or need to commute in general. KnowYourSnow will allow teachers to notify students if class is cancelled, and post further directions. It will notify users if roads are closed, trains are off schedule, or flights are cancelled. It will basically replace your local weather network with a fun, innovative, user-friendly snow notification machine.

  1. This is a great idea, as i was initially reading i was hoping that you would take it into a predictive direction because that is really what kids try and do when they look at the weather. I think it would also be interesting to correlate with the prediction about school closing the amount of hype that a storm receives. I know in my old town, that if a storm was talked about more and more, the school was even known to cancel school the next day before snow even hit the ground based on the weather report alone.

  2. I think that this is a good idea because I remember those days i would have to wake up early to see if there is enough snow outside for school to be closed and when watching the news it would take so long for them to reach to your town then if you miss the announcement about your town you would have to wait til they start over. And I like that it would tell you if something is closed or not because more than once I’ve gone to school to find out it was closed.

  3. This application I believe could be very successful and make a big hit! I like your idea and how not only will it tell you if you will or will not have a snow day but it will help you get in touch with your teachers/ professors as well. I also like how you not only directed it to students in school but people who are commuting, or traveling via public transportation. I could not tell you how many times I have gone to take the train or bus and it has been delayed due to bad weather back at home. I think this app has a lot of potential and could really go somewhere!

  4. This is a very good idea, especially for people in Syracuse, and even more so for those of us who have never experienced a winter here before. It would be great to have one place where weather and school alerts are all combined. Right now we have to check a weather app, blackboard, email, and more to find out this information. Having one app is so much more convenient. Waking up late and rushing to class through the snow just to find out it has been canceled is not fun, but that would not happen with this app. Once this gets started, it would not be hard to convince schools and teachers to use it then it will spread and expand from there.

  5. This is a very good idea! I wish I had something like this when I was back in high school! I used to stay up all night seeing if I had to do homework for the next day or not. I like how you didn't stop at just the app but also have a facebook/twitter/website. Good work on the project!
